Cloud costs eating up profits

Welcome to our mini case studies series. These quick-read success stories highlight the common challenges our clients face and how we work with them to solve them. As we work in many competitive sectors, leading through innovation, we can't always share their name or specific details of the work we do.

Automation and simplified architecture to improve the profitability of a growing Sports Marketing platform

Utilising cloud technology from one of the largest cloud vendors, this sports marketing business benefited from being able to scale horizontally quickly - but at a significant cost.

Our due diligence revealed there was little need for millions of concurrent users. Much of it was simple content delivery.

We identified economies of scale and began a simplification programme to make ongoing support easier and onboarding new customers profitable.

The impact of cost complexity.

By utilising cloud technology from one of the largest cloud vendors, this sports marketing platform business benefited from being able to scale horizontally quickly - but at a cost.

The platform was optimised for millions of concurrent users - which, on review, was unnecessary.

The current, exceedingly complex set-up was wiping out profit.

A shift to a simplied architecture.

Our due diligence revealed there was little in their real estate that required millions of concurrent users. Much of it was simple content delivery.

We also highlighted other components that were massively overengineered and this was incurring significant costs.

We identified potential economies of scale and began a simplification programme.

Fit for profitable growth.

Simplifying their architecture meant saving costs on the core build. Automation allowed for economies of scale (reusing and sharing resources like payment services).

This meant ongoing support would be easier for their team, but most importantly, they were able to bring on new customers profitably.

Their platform was now ready to support their growth plans.
